A Look Back at Tulsa

The city of Tulsa in Oklahoma traces its rich history to the arrival of Native American Settlers. In 1838, President Andrew Jackson of the United States forced the Native Americans to flee from their original homes through gaining the approval of Congress. This prompted the Native Americans to search for a new territory in order to retain their way of life. Many of these natives died before they were able to reach the new settlement. Diseases arose because of poor sanitation and lack of clean water supplies. The approximated number of deaths reached thousands. Some records show that whole families may have died during this mass removal now known as The Indian Removal Act. When the Native Americans finally arrived at Tulsa, they quickly sought to rebuild their lives. They built homes and re-established their concept of trade and commerce once more. However, years after the mass removal of the natives, the American settlers caught up with them. The evidence of this was the trading post established in Tulsa before the Civil War. This trading post did not last long because people chose to abandon it when the fighting began. When the Civil War ended, Tulsa saw a growth business and realestate. Tulsa (Oklahoma) suddenly gained popularity once more because of the influx of people in the said area. Trade began to flourish and people came to this locale to look for jobs. Various businesses came to Tulsa to begin their operations. Some former residents also came back to build their homes in Tulsa. New homes built by migrants also appeared during this period. Later on, when the post office and the railroad opened shop more businesses followed. Groceries, drug stores, lumber companies and blacksmith shops began finding its way in the area. During the 1900’s, the area became known as the world’s oil capital and fame once again came to Tulsa. New homes and new businesses came along with the boom of the oil industry. Though the oil industry declined, Tulsa continues to be economically capable through other ventures. At present, the city houses trades in telecommunication, finance, aerospace, manufacturing and technology as it continues to stand proud of its history.
