Symbols are pictures, objects, sounds, written words or something else and imply concepts, ideas, notions, feelings and beliefs. A number of them are commonly used, such as a white rectangle on the red background referring to “STOP”, others have particular sense and provoke deep emotions. The examples of such symbols are the Star or David in Judaism and the crucifix in Christianity. We all are surrounded by symbols. Every day we face something that has a symbolic sense. You'll see symbols on money, in commercials, music compositions, books, politics etc. To understand the significance of a symbol a person needs to know what this symbol implies. For example, the Chinese "yin and yang" symbol looks like a funny picture with black and white colors for people that don't know the secret sense of this sign. They can enjoy its design, but they don't see more than that. On the contrary, if a person knows the origin of the symbol he or she sees not just an image, but an idea of deep interrelation of things in our living. During the history of humankind symbols were vastly used in art. This way, one item on a painting can speak volumes about the situation, the ideas of the painter, his view on life and beliefs. To understand the secret significance of a music composition or a book we need to pay special attention to symbols. Every now and then we have to read critics on a certain work of art so as to get the idea of the author. This is because the symbols language isn't so simple. So what are the most widespread symbols in art and what do they represent? Amongst the most common symbols applied in pieces of art are books, candles, clocks and a mirror. A book usually represents learning and transmitting of knowledge. In case you see a lightened candle on a picture it is in most cases a symbol of faith in God or time passing. On the other hand, an extinguished candle implies death and mourning. A clock refers to the time passing. On this point the world-known painting of Salvador Dali called “Melting clocks” refers to an idea that nothing in our life complies with some rules. And finally, a mirror signifies efforts to find the truth, but in some situations it just implies the vanity. In such a way, symbols are everywhere around us. We just should be a little more attentive to details to see them. |
