Erectile dysfunction: psychological and physical factors

Two types of erectile dysfunction are distinguished. Rare as it is, primary erectile dysfunction means that a male has never had an erection sufficient for sexual intercourse. Secondary ED, a commoner loss of erectile ability after a normal function, commonly develops gradually unless brought on by an injury or sudden medical condition. Impotence was once considered to be triggered by psychological problems. But we now know that factors such as strain, depression and fear of poor sexual performance are at the root of only 10% - 20% of ED. In most cases it is triggered by physical factors, such as vascular disorders, nerve damage, abnormalities in the genitals. Erectile dysfunction can also be a side effect of certain prescriptions and over-the-counter medications. However, whatever the causes are, men who experience ED are usually concerned and feel guilty and powerless. There are only three oral drugs sanctioned by the U.S. FDA to treat ED: Cialis, Levitra, and Viagra. The medications relax and widen the penile walls allowing more blood to flow to the organ, so that when a male is sexually aroused, he can get an erection. The drugs are potent and work by a similar mechanism to cause an erection. There are subtle differences in how long and how rapidly the drug works. Levitra works a bit longer than Viagra. They both take effect in approximately thirty minutes. Viagra works effectively for about 4 hours, while Levitra for 5 hours. Cialis works a little faster (in about 15 minutes after administration), and the effects last a lot longer - up to 36 hours in some cases. Although each medication has proven efficacious, none is cure-all. Besides, they can lead to problems if interact with other drugs, in particular with nitrate or nitroglycerin heart medicines, as well as trigger more general side effects, such as splitting headaches and - in the case of Viagra - blurred vision. Along with drugs, there are other treatment methods, such as vacuum therapy, penile injections, urethral pellets and penile implants for severe cases of ED. The kind of therapy, hence, is dependent upon the severity of erection problems.
