According to the National Health, Lung and Blood Institute, approximately 2 of every 3 Americans are overweight. What is more, obesity is the second main cause of preventable death in the United States. The first thing that enters one's mind when it is time to lose weight is a diet. A diet is about changing eating habits. Eating food rich in vitamins and low in fats and sugar is the main key to losing weight and staying healthy. The healthy diet differs from the so-called crash diets which promise fantastic results in no time. Still, most crash diets are unhealthy, because they mean starvation. The body loses a lot of water - the most vital substance - and muscle tissue. These are the two key components that the body needs to burn body fat. If you are on a fad diet, you can see a considerably large loss of weight in the beginning. As your metabolism (the chemical process by which food is changed into energy) is slowed down, it becomes increasingly difficult to burn body fat. So, most people give up. To lose weight permanently, it is necessary to modify your food intake. The best thing is that there is no need to give up your best-loved "comfort foods" in order to eat right. Instead, make them healthier by replacing ingredients. For example, regular sour cream can be substituted by its low-fat counterpart. Eat low-fat ground poultry in place of ground beef in a meat loaf recipe. Fresh fruit or veggies from home, for instance, are much healthier than foods from a vending machine. Use smaller dishes to make portions look larger and begin a "no seconds" policy. If you are eating out, select smaller portions, share large servings or take leftovers home for the next day. More Americans than ever before are estimated to be polishing off regardless of food placed in front of them. Individuals unconsciously consume as much as 56% more calories when order large portions. Stay away from high-calorie foods low in nutrition, including candies, soft drinks, chips and cookies. Note that no smart eating program is efficacious without physical activity. Thirty minutes of walking, at least 5 times a week, can bring you good results. |
