Herpes viruses are the main cause of human viral disease, second only to influenza and cold viruses. They can trigger either overt disease or remain silent for many years. The name herpes originates from the Latin 'herpes' which, in turn, originates from the Greek word 'herpein' which denotes 'to creep'. This describes the creeping or spreading nature of the skin lesions brought on by many herpes virus types. There are, at least, 25 viruses in the family Herpesviridae (currently classified into 3 sub-families). Eight or more herpes types are known to affect man frequently. Herpes affects a staggering number of people around the world. Millions of people are carriers of HSV-2 (Herpes Simplex Virus}, the strain principally responsible for genital herpes. Many people are unaware that they are infectious. One of the roadblocks to preventing herpes is the lack of information on the virus. Defining herpes There is neither cure nor herpes vaccine. The virus penetrates into the skin cells and multiplies there, eventually triggering skin irritation, redness and sores. After an outbreak, herpes travels from the nerve endings to the spinal cord, where it remains until another outbreak. Still, it is possible to live a normal and happy life with the virus, including an active sex life and childbirth. What is an outbreak? Herpes lesions are small-sized sores or blisters that appear singly or in groups. They range from mildly to exceedingly painful and trigger an itching or burning feeling. The lesions look like red, white or gray blisters or open sores. Because it travels through nerve ganglia, herpes typically recurs near the site of initial infection. Outbreaks can last from a few days to several weeks. The first outbreak normally occurs within 2-21 days of contagion. Severity and duration commonly reduce with recurrences, as soon as the body has developed a defence of antibodies. Sores do not commonly leave scars, unless become infected with bacteria. Outbreaks can be coupled with flu-like symptoms, including general uneasiness, headaches, muscle aches, fever, tiredness or swollen lymph nodes. Yet, a great many people may have few or no symptoms, which is one reason why Herpes Simplex is so widespread. An outbreak can also occur within the genitalia, where it may not be easily seen or felt. For more information about herpes, please visit antiherpes.net.
