When you enter the world of Internet, not always you will have a pleasant experience. There will be a plethora of programs that will try to harm your computer in different ways. These malicious codes have a nasty intention of entering your computer to infect your precious files and folders. Some programs even have the capability of stealing important information (like credit card number). These programs are designed by intelligent cyber- criminals, whose sole intention is to steal money from innocent individuals in a cryptic way. They are so dangerous that, it is impossible to find a trace of their activities. The programs are primarily of two types, namely Virus and Worm. Virus – A virus is a piece of programming code, that copies itself into another program, and in the process infects that program to distort its functionality. Viruses can be sent through an attachment to an e-mail note, they can also be present in a downloaded file, or in a diskette or CD. Initially it is difficult to predict the presence of a virus, but these nasty programs become activated when you execute their code. Worm – A worm is a stand-alone program that gets installed in your PC whenever a pop-up is displayed, or they replicate themselves by re-sending your e-mail attachment. As you can see, a worm is dependant on computer networks to replicate it, it searches for loopholes in the security, and enters through the most vulnerable position. The common symptoms that indicate the presence of a Virus or Worm are:- 1) Machine becomes extremely slow. 2) Unknown messages on your desktop. 3) Windows firewall turned off automatically. 4) Pop-ups appear endlessly. 5) Home-page changed automatically. 6) Unknown applications in Add/remove program. 7) Unusual icons on your system tray or desktop. 8) Memory is much less than the original capacity. 9) Unknown favorites in favorite tab. 10) Alteration in desktop properties. To counter these problems, you need a good anti-virus and anti-spyware program in your repertory. There are some quality anti-virus and anti-spyware available in the market. Their functionality includes scanning the boot-sector as well as drives to search every file and folder for the presence of virus. A good anti-spyware monitors changes made in the computer, and deletes any kind of malicious programs running in the background. You can also visit various Computer Help sites who offer to remove the viruses by taking remote control of you PC. Therefore, it is important to have a good antivirus and anti-spyware software, which will prevent your computer from future attacks and help you to enjoy working in a virus free PC. |
