The term "Psychiatry" was coined by Doctor J.C. Reil from Germany in 1808. Psychiatry is a science that studies and treats mental disorders. Many mental illnesses are treated by a professional. Psychiatrists work across the world. Psychiatrists help people to handle depression, treat sleep disorders etc. There are many mental illnesses and phobias that require specialist medical treatment. Common mental disorders are anorexia, delusion, depression, tiredness, anxiety, confusion, erratic behavior etc. One of the common mental illnesses now is anorexia. It begins when a person starves deliberately or consumes less to lose weight. Yet, starving results in a loss of appetite and adverse health problems, for example infertility in women. SCHIZOPHRENIA is another serious mental illness. It has been a challenge to Psychiatry for ages. People suffering from the disorder percept the reality differently. Hallucinations, abnormality in speech, disorganized thinking pattern, paranoia are common behavioral patterns in schizophrenic patients. Schizophrenic people commonly suffer from severe depressions and anxiety disorders. Schizophrenics live less than mentally healthy people. One of the reasons is a high suicidal rate among patients suffering from the disorder. Even though it is not passed from parents to children, Schizophrenia is recorded to affect family members. Alcohol addiction is a common problem to be treated by specialists. Social problems, for instance unemployment, poor living conditions and homelessness, are common as well. PSYCHIATRY handles mental disorders that are resulted from chemical imbalances in the brain. The way people think, their beliefs, their culture and experience, life situations and a lot of other things shape up their psyche that might be seriously challenged due to circumstances. A psychiatrist through a psychiatric aid and prescription medicine try to revive the balance in the brain. It requires a lot of effort and time to recover. Some cases, however, are untreatable. |
