Moscow is one of the oldest and most gorgeous metropolises in the world. It has got a long and interesting history. The city has been completely ruined and rebuilt anew a lot of times throughout the years. Each time the city was resurrected from the ruins, it got more and more gorgeous. For every rebuilding, the most gifted and renowned architects were invited from all over the world to restore Moscow. Therefore, Moscow places of interest are truly worth seeing. Now Moscow is the city where the old and the new exist side by side in reciprocal tolerance and respect. Beside ancient convents and cathedrals, there tower over ultramodern business centres and skyscrapers. But, first and foremost, Moscow is the centre of Russia's history. Being the symbol of the metropolis, Red Square is the most renowned city square in Moscow and, arguably, one of the best-known in the world. It separates the Kremlin, the former royal citadel and now the official residence of Russia's President, from a historic merchant quarter called Kitai-gorod. As the principal Moscow streets run from here in every direction, Red Square is usually considered the central square of Moscow and of the Russian Federation. Resurrection Gate is the only existing gate of the Kitai-gorod in Moscow. It joins the north-western end of Red Square with Manege Square and gives its name to Voskresenskaya Square (differently called Resurrection Square) located nearby. Alexander Garden was one of the first public parks in Moscow. It occupies all the length of the western Kremlin wall in front of the Moscow Manege. The State Historical Museum of Russia is set between Red Square and Manege Square. Its displays vary from relics of the prehistoric tribes that live on the territory of present-day Russia to valuable artworks obtained by the Romanovs. The total number of objects in the collection displayed in the museum numbers in millions. They say Moscow will certainly exhaust you before you exhaust its possibilities.
